BASICALLY i’m really angry because it seems that nowadays a lot more young adult books are geared toward girls rather than guys which is fine but i’m a guy and while guys *can* read about girls falling in love with the perfect guy while trying to save the world… it’s not really…

I am a teenage girl, and I get fed up with a lot of YA fiction these days. You talk about strong female characters, and yeah, those are great, but there is way too much romance in recent books. My ideal level of romance is the Harry Potter level; there, but not the end-all-be-all of the story, and realistic. Too much romance is of the Romeo-and-Juliet variety, and the only thing that really drives the story.

And it seems like every time I turn around, I run into another love triangle.

So I think your argument about female characters is valid; but I also think that a lot of YA is actually geared toward girls. Reading is kind of seen as more of a girl thing anyway, like video games “belong” is the boys’ realm. And a lot of female protagonists are actually less well-developed and strong than female heroines in books with male protagonists. It’s like people think, “oh, obviously this isn’t sexist, the main character is female,” and so they don’t put the characters under as much scrutiny, and are maybe even afraid to criticize them in fear of being labeled sexist.

I am not sure what you have against love triangles. They’ve been around for a while, and lots of boys get them too.

http://sarahreesbrennan.tumblr.com/post/15486442487/why-do-you-think-love-triangles-are-so-popular-these

If they’re not your thing, totally fine! Everyone’s got a preference. (I wasn’t a fan of the way Harry Potter handled romance, personally. ;)) But I don’t see why they’re a Girl Thing.

I am not sure why you think people are hesitant about critiquing female characters. It happens every minute of every hour of every day. I have heard more criticism of my female characters than I have of my male ones and I think I can say the same of every single writer I’ve ever discussed the matter with.

http://gingerhaze.tumblr.com/post/48722888794/from-a-message-i-dont-think-you-can-really-say

http://hexybellerachel.tumblr.com/post/36154911565/male-character-i-made-a-mistake-fandom-oh-you

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/all%20the%20fictional%20women%20you%20hate

We are all raised in a messed-up world, and we feel discomfort when people talk about uncomfortable subjects like sexism. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about them.

So, you’ve just read a book and you want to find one just like it. I highly suggest using Bookish’s search bar. Not only does it bring up the books in the same genre, but the links to buy them through the site and other places online. The site is also filled with recommendations and is set so you can add books to your virtual shelves, kind of like GoodReads. All around, it’s a great place to find new books!
