I read books, and review them. Sometimes I befriend them.

I’m surprised this hasn’t come across my dash since I first read it last week, but it might be of interest to fellow readers here: Stanford researchers tested the difference between casual and close reading by having students read a chapter of Mansfield Park while their brains were being scanned.
Phillips said the global increase in blood flow during close reading suggests that “paying attention to literary texts requires the coordination of multiple complex cognitive functions.” Blood flow also increased during pleasure reading, but in different areas of the brain. Phillips suggested that each style of reading may create distinct patterns in the brain that are “far more complex than just work and play.”
Worth a full read if you’re interested.

I’ve decided to stop reading Beloved by Toni Morrison in the middle of the second chapter. I don’t find it all that interesting. Has anybody ever read this novel? If so, does it get interesting AT ALL? I know I’ll probably try to check it out again in the future, because I don’t like giving up on books.
I’m going to start on Cannery Row by John Steinbeck, so I can then read Dead Tease and Succubus Revealed before FINALLY getting to George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings :D
I read in the order in which I checked out my books.
I struggled to get through this book too. BUT it gets kind of creepy at the end with the character of Beloved. I liked the end, hated the beginning. It took me a long time to finish it.
Megan Meade’s Guide to the McGowan Boys by Kate Brian
The story was cute. If you’re looking for something fun, fresh and away from overrated teen drama or want something to go along with your coke. This book will do great. You’ll finish it in no time. The highlights, if it wasn’t obvious, are Meag’s observations/guides for boys which are funny but true.
My fave Meagan’s entry was..
“ Boys are unpredictable. This maybe not be news, but I’m starting to think it’s one of the best things about them.”
I read this book when I was a freshman in HS. Oh, the memories!
